AUCTION INSIGHT
As fall harvest moves into full swing, forage harvesters play an important role for operations focused on silage and feed production. At Catalyst Communications, Hot Line Farm and Antique Monthly Update tracks auction activity to help buyers make informed, timely equipment decisions.
Forage harvesters became widely used in the mid-20th century, transforming the way livestock operations produced feed. From early pull-type models to today’ s self-propelled machines with advanced sensors and chopping systems, their role in silage production has only grown more important.
Recent auction activity shows interest across both pull-type and self-propelled forage harvesters:
• New Holland 718 pull-types were the most frequently traded, averaging around $ 2,500.
• New Holland FP240 models at auction brought in as much as $ 20,000 for newer models. Older models still brought in around a quarter of that.
• New Holland 790 pull-type with metal detector sold near the mid –$ 7,000 range at auction.
• Claas Jaguar 970 self-propelled harvesters highlighted the premium end of the market ranging from $ 40,000 all the way up to $ 271,100.
The sales reflect how late-model self-propelled units command premium prices, whereas pull-types still provide an economical path. Buyers seeking value can find solid pull-types for under $ 10,000.
