Energy Savings: Squeezing More Out of the Pump
Pumping is one of the highest costs in irrigation, and that ' s why variable frequency drives( VFDs) are an important consideration. A VFD adjusts motor speed to match what the system needs in real time instead of running full blast constantly. Even a small drop in motor speed can cut energy use by up to 30 %, with payback ranging from a few months to under ten years.
Actual savings depend on well setup and how many systems share a pump, so results vary from farm to farm. Florida grower B. J. Wilkerson saved $ 8 to $ 12 an acre in operating costs after installing VFDs on his center pivots, with the best returns on wells feeding more than one pivot.
Financing Options
USDA ' s Environmental Quality Incentives Program, run through the
NRCS, is the go-to funding source for these upgrades. Key numbers to know:
• Up to 75 % cost-share on approved practices
• Up to 90 % for beginning farmers and historically underserved producers
• $ 800 to $ 1,200 per acre for center pivots and $ 1,500 to $ 2,500 per acre for drip systems, per Kansas NRCS payment rates
• Applications accepted year-round, but funded in ranked cycles, so timing an application matters
• A conservation plan developed with NRCS is required before installation begins
What to Watch For
None of these upgrades are a sure thing on every farm. A few limits worth weighing before signing off:
• VRI pays off on fields with real soil or terrain variation, uniform ground sees a much smaller benefit
• Sensor savings depend on how good, or how loose, the current watering schedule already is
• VFD payback hinges on well configuration and pumping hours more than the drive itself
• Cost-share funding takes cash up front, plus paperwork and competition for funds can stretch the timeline from application to installation past a full season
Looking Forward
The research backs up what a lot of growers already suspect: water savings without yield loss are within reach, and the technology to get there keeps getting cheaper and easier to install.
