driver orientations and providing routine training.
Workers should be trained on machinery hazards, safe distances, maintenance safety procedures and confined space risks and procedures.
Prevention Through Consistency & Culture
Accidents happen, but most injuries in agriculture are preventable. Training, awareness, PPE, proper equipment use and a strong safety culture can significantly reduce risk.
Encourage experienced operators to work with and mentor newer employees, helping reinforce safe habits and proper procedures. Shortcuts should be avoided, especially during high-pressure work periods. This can be an easy trap to fall into when time is short or stress is high, but it can quickly become the standard of work if left unchecked. Keeping a close eye on fatigue, distraction and impaired operation is also critical, as these factors can greatly affect accident rates.
Always ensure compliance with equipment manuals, laws, regulations and safe operating procedures. Together, these efforts contribute to a stronger safety culture, reducing reliance on reactive measures and helping improve incident rates.

Best Practices

Safety in agricultural operations is a year-round responsibility, but it becomes even more important during peak operational seasons. Consistency builds habits, and good habits contribute to the success of an operation, potentially reducing downtime while lowering risk.
Equipment
• Shut down machinery before any maintenance or service
• Keep guards, shields and protective devices in place
• Avoid loose clothing, unsecured long hair and jewelry
• Maintain consistent equipment inspection and maintenance schedules
• Ensure proper lighting and clear walkways
• Implement rollover protective structures( ROPS), which are required on all tractors with more than 20 horsepower manufactured after October 25, 1976
Operation
• No passengers on equipment unless it was designed for it
• Use standardized hand signals and communication systems
• Implement vehicle safety technology, such as collision avoidance and stability control
• Use slow-moving vehicle( SMV) emblems and reflective markings during roadway travel
• Never allow children or unauthorized persons near operating equipment
• Enforce safe-driving practices and distraction-free driving
• Require PPE for appropriate equipment, such as a helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, long sleeves and pants for ATV use
Storage & Handling
• Store equipment away from livestock buildings and fuel sources to avoid fires
• Storage areas should be dry, clean and debris-free
• Ensure safe electrical clearance and clear exit paths
• Remove keys and secure equipment when not in use
• Lock and secure all storage areas
• Restrict access to authorized persons
