Agriculture news is not just headlines. It is personal.
Prices fluctuate, policies shift, and big announcements rarely include instructions; sometimes, the people making decisions seem miles away from those living with them.

• Zero fluff
• Honest tone Welcome to THE DIRT, where we cover what matters to agriculture with truth, wit, and a little side eye when needed.

$ 8B Relief Program Aims to Ease Farm Costs
Harvest costs are adding up, and the United States Department of Agriculture( USDA) is preparing $ 8 billion in one-time payments to help farmers manage market disruptions and increased input costs.
Announced October 19, the Harvest Fuel Relief program is intended to cover a portion of modeled losses during the 2026 crop year.
Payments will be calculated using a uniform formula based on planted acres reported to the Farm Service Agency, production cost estimates, and yield and price data. Payment rates for major eligible commodities are expected in November, with details for other eligible commodities to follow.
Producers can prepare by creating a Login. gov account and linking it to USDA for access to prefilled online applications when the application period opens. Crop insurance is not required to participate.
Specialty crop growers and other producers of non-Title I commodities can also submit information about increased fuel costs for USDA to consider when setting payment rates.
USDA is expanding crop insurance flexibility for 2027 and developing a new process to support U. S. cotton trade under its Great American Cotton Plan.
Eligible producers, including cotton growers, will be able to purchase multiple endorsements on a crop insurance policy, giving them additional options for managing production risks.
The Risk Management Agency plans to provide final implementation details to approved insurance providers and crop insurance agents by November 30, 2026. The change follows broader crop insurance updates under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act.
Separately, USDA’ s Foreign Agricultural Service is developing a process to verify U. S. cotton purchases by Bangladesh, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia. The mechanism is scheduled to launch in 2027 and will support preferential tariff treatment for apparel imports made with U. S. cotton and textile inputs..
