Steiger

Douglass and Maurice Steiger were farmers near Red Lake Falls, Minnesota. In 1958, they felt a need for a larger tractor to solve their own farming problems. The first Steiger Tractor was a product of this necessity. The Steigers, using truck parts, designed and built the first model in their farm shop. This first tractor utilized four-wheel-drive and a 238 Detroit Diesel truck engine. After logging over 10,000 hours of farm duty, the decision was made to manufacture and sell these tractors. Beginning in 1963, the Steiger tractor was manufactured and built from their factory in Fargo, North Dakota. Their popularity is due in part to the use of brand name components such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Allison, Clark and Spicer. It soon became the number one fourwheel-drive tractor in North America with models including 1200, 1700, 2200 and 3300. The Steiger continued to gain popularity and in 1986 became part of the Case-International family and is still manufactured under the Steiger brand. More recent models took on cat names like Puma, Wildcat, Bearcat, Cougar, Panther and Lion. In 1986, Tenneco, Inc., the then parent of J. I. Case, bought Steiger. Today, the Case IH STX Steiger series leads the 4WD market and continues the Steiger tradition started in 1958.
